2 Parrotlets or 1 Parrotlet + Another type of bird

I hope this is the right forum to post this in :) But question anyways ..

I am tempted to buy a companion for my parrotlet now that I took away his mirror. He is a bit over 4 months old and now that I took away his mirror maybe I should get him a friend. At the pet store today I saw this gorgeous gray/blue parrotlet that was about 8 months old.

IF I was to get a companion does it matter with his age being a bit older and that they are both males?

They may or may not bond, however if you get a friend for your baby they may never bond with you. When birds bond they often want little if anything to do with the human. This is not always the case but often is the way it turns out.

:bana: I had 3 parrotlets scooby nod2 and sky are a bonded pair and i also had smurf blue1 she was by herself but she is my baby, i felt sorry for her because sometimes she looked so lonely so i got her a companion at the weekend another little girl parrotlet nod2 a little bit younger than smurf, but their hit it off straightaway. I know their will bond with each other but i still get smurf out for a cuddle on a daily basis and up to now she is still as loving as ever, but i know 2 parrotlets can be difficult to train and handle. I am not sure whether 2 male parrotlets are ok together though

Most experts agree that the only reason to get another p'let is because you want one, don't get one as a companion bird as p'lets are fine on their own. Don't worry about his reaction to losing the mirror, if you are spending quite a bit of time with him now he will soon get over it. If you're leaving him on his own a lot then he needs lots of toys. If you are leaving him on his own, why would you want another p'let?

Each case is different, but generally if the bird is very bonded to you first, it probably won't lose that bond completely but it will more than likely bond with the other bird more.

We had Boo Boo for about 6 months or so & she was totally bonded to me. When we got Pesto, they were kept in separate cages for a while & we gradually brought them together. They are in the same cage now & get on fine but they're not really bonded to each or me now. I can handle them both & they're both very tame, but as I said, Boo Boo has lost some of her bond with me.

I have a question that somewhat goes along with this, I am thinking I want to get a budgie- I would let Mochi (my p-let) meet him first to make sure they'd get along, but would they be all right in a cage together? (It does has adequate room.)

I wouldn't do that because even though Parrotlets are small he could seriously hurt a parakeet.

You'd be best to keep them in seperate cages. They COULD get along, but it really isn't worth the risk. It only takes a second for disaster to happen, and you can't supervise tham all the time.
